Predicted XI: Manchester City (H)

The big tests are coming think and fast now, and today’s game against the champions Manchester City is no different as we look to bounce back from our defeat against Napoli in midweek. Here’s who The Anfield Talk’s Ian (@ianyoungkop) thinks the boss will start the match with…

Alisson: Not many players came out of the midweek defeat well, Alisson did, coming to Liverpool’s rescue on many occasions until the 90th minute when he finally conceded and we losses the game 1-0.

Alexander-Arnold: Trent had another tough game against Napoli as he struggled in Italy. Arnold hasn’t been at his best so far this season, but we need to remember that he only turns 20 today, and we need to be patient at times. The kid is good, but by no means is he the finished article. Will be hoping for 3 points on his birthday.

Gomez: Like Alisson, a rare shining light in a pretty poor performance for Liverpool in midweek.  Joe looks like he’s playing for LFC at the centre back for years, not 2 months. Building a great partnership with Van Dijk.

van Dijk: Another mountainous display couldn’t stop us succumbing to defeat on Wednesday night, but again van Dijk was an absolute beacon as he is partner and goalkeeper tried in vain to keep a clean sheet in Naples. Will hopefully stop the wealth of talent that City have in attack today.

Robertson: Again, a fullback not having a great season thus far, as couple of times been caught out of position or under the ball. His intensity has still been there for all to see though, and I can’t see him not being picked in the starting eleven against City.

Wijnaldum: Had one of his poorer games midweek in midfield but he wasn’t on his own. It was a bad day at the office for so many of our team and a game pretty much straight after to get it out of their system is probably what the red men need.

Henderson: Came on to replace Keita , who had to bow out through injury , like so many during Wednesday night, seemed to struggle. Hopefully our midfield will be stronger today, as our midfield will be so important against City.

Milner: In my opinion I think the last 3 or 4 games , Milner has looked tired and could do with a rest, so thankfully for James, after today’s game there is an international break! We’ll need a big display from Milly if we are going to get anything out of today.

Mané: Our front 3 seemed to love playing City at Anfield last season, and it would be perfect if today was the day our front 3 finally clicked into gear this season. So far our front 3 seem to be taking an extra touch, or making the wrong choice, but there’s a lot of pressure on them to produce what they did last season.

Firmino: Bobby still doesn’t seem to be quite firing on all cylinders just yet, but I’m sure him doing so isn’t far away. Our front 3 had extremely long seasons with Liverpool as well as a World Cup to deal with, but I’m sure the slump is only temporary.

Salah: Liverpool supporters where shocked and concerned to find Salah’s shoulder still strapped up after his injury in the Champions League final. Seems unsure of himself, but was missing as many chances at this point in the season last year as he is now! I’m sure it’s only a matter of type before everything our Egyptian King touches turns into goals once again.
