Player Ratings: Southampton 1 Liverpool 2

Ings (83’) // Mané (45+1’), Firmino (71’)

The Reds play dreadfully for the first 45 but Sadio Mané pops up to stick one in the back of the net. Liverpool are better in the second half and double their lead through Roberto Firmino, but a late goal from ex-Red Danny Ings ensured the final ten minutes were nervy.

This was far from vintage Liverpool, but with a midweek trip to Istanbul and 120 minutes under the belt going into this game, these three points will be more than welcome. Getting a result was the only important thing.

Up the Reds.

Adrián- 8/10
Think he actually has a really good game. Makes some crucial saves at 0-0, keeping Liverpool in the game. Makes a great save from Joel Matip. Then kicks one straight at Danny Ings.
Trent Alexander-Arnold- 7/10
Put some excellent balls in and is probably unlucky not to walk off with at least one assist. Got caught out a couple of times and had to take a cynical booking.
Joel Matip- 6/10
Think he went back to the Joel Matip of old for a bit. Tried to lob Adrián with a header and then tried to slot past him.
Virgil van Dijk- 8/10
Don’t really have anything to say other than that he was great.
Andrew Robertson- 7/10
Looked like he was getting back to his best, forced an excellent save from their goalkeeper.
James Milner- 6/10
Went off for some stitches in his head and that’s when things went downhill in the first half. Reckon you should probably be allowed to make temporary substitutions in cases like that. Otherwise was alright, not sure he’d cut out to be a starter these days, but needs must.
Georginio Wijnaldum- 7/10
Did alright, nothing flashy or too visible but seemed to be doing his usual job well.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain- 7/10
Thought he was great for the first fifteen/twenty or so of each half. Should’ve done better with his effort on goal.
Mohamed Salah- 6/10
Bit of an off day and should’ve done better for his one on one. That’s a sentence I’ve written before.
Sadio Mané- 10/10
Plucks a wonder strike from nowhere. Puts a chance for Firmino on a plate, and presses the mistake for Firmino’s goal.
Roberto Firmino- 8/10
Missed an absolute sitter, but sticks away his second chance. Does a mad celebration.

Fabinho- 6/10
Ran on and did some shoring up.
Divock Origi- 6/10
Ran and ran around a bit.
Jordan Henderson- 10/10
Ran on and bollocked some people. My hero my mate.

Ralph Hasenhuttl- 0/10
The fucking state of his clobber.

VAR and the officials- 9/10
Great job. No long delays, no confusion, worked perfectly. Long live our robot overlords.
