Mertens (81’ pen), Llorente (90’)
THE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE HAVE BEEN DEFEATED.
Liverpool’s defence of their Champions League crown got off to a rocky start as the lost to Napoli on Tuesday evening. Napoli took the lead in what had been a cagey affair thanks to a dubiously awarded penalty. They added a second after van Dijk misplaced a pass, to leave Liverpool third in their Champions League group.
Kept Liverpool in the game at times. Made a terrific double stop and a phenomenal lunging save from Mertens.
Trent Alexander-Arnold- 7/10
Cleaned up well behind Joel Matip in the first half and generally impressed. Asked questions of Napoli’s back line.
Joel Matip- 5/10
Reverted to the Joel Matip of days past, and decided he’d give the ball to Napoli for the first ten or fifteen minutes. Improved as the game wore on and made some good last ditch challenges.
Virgil van Dijk- 6/10
Probably one of his worst performances. Gets caught under the one for Adrián’s wonder save and gives it away sloppily for the second.
Andrew Robertson- 6/10
As with many others, wasn’t at his best. Conceded a penalty that isn’t a penalty. One of them.
Made some superb, perfectly timed tackles. Recycled the ball well and was smart in possession.
Jordan Henderson- 7/10
Played some good balls forward and often found his man. Always looked to go forward and to drive the team up the pitch.
James Milner- 6/10
Did loads of running. Played some good balls but tarred his performance late on when he jibbed the running and starting lashing their lads all over the place.
Mohamed Salah- 6/10
Wasn’t at his usual irresistible best, with some poor decision making in the final third.
Sadio Mané- 6/10
Also wasn’t up to his usual high standard, like Salah his decision making could’ve been better. Had it been better, he could’ve walked off with two goals to his name.
Roberto Firmino- 6/10
Was disappointing following his sublime display against Newcastle, and definitely wasn’t at his usual best. Should’ve scored from Milner’s ball.
Georginio Wijnaldum- 4/10
Came on and didn’t have much of an impact. Heavy touches.
Xherdan Shaqiri- N/A
Came on and looked like a cube.
