Player Ratings: Liverpool 4 Norwich City 1

Hanley (OG, 7’), Salah (19’), van Dijk (28’), Origi (42’) // Pukki (64’)

LIVERPOOL START THE NEW SEASON WITH A WIN.

The league opener provided plenty of goals as Liverpool raced into a 4-0 lead in the first half. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker went off with an injury, which is a worry. The second half was largely uneventful, as Norwich pulled one back.

Up the top of the league Reds.

Alisson Becker- N/A
Get better soon sweet prince. My leg is available for donation if needed.
Trent Alexander-Arnold- 6/10
Got caught defensively a few times but going forward was good. Played a delightful ball from Origi’s goal, and should have had a second assist for the one Firmino squandered wide.
Joe Gomez- 6/10
Also got caught a few times and let Norwich’s attackers in behind. That said, covered really well down by the right corner flag late in the second half.

Virgil van Dijk- 8/10
As you’d expect. Great header for his goal.
Andrew Robertson- 7/10
Got forward plenty and defended well enough. The usual.
Georginio Wijnaldum- 6/10
Did alright. Can’t say I noticed him that much. Should probably be replaced by Keïta or Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Fabinho- 9/10
Phenomenal. Seemed like he was everywhere, winning tackles, nicking the ball, making interceptions. Showed he’s got a decent shot on him, too.
Jordan Henderson- 8/10
Great job. Played some great balls and could’ve had a goal or two. Really like him in his more advanced role.
Roberto Firmino- 8/10
Pressing, and pressing, and pressing. Spinning around. Showed some quality first touches and should’ve gotten a goal for his efforts.
Divock Origi- 7/10
He’s done it again, in the right place to get the goal. Forced the first goal too, with his low shot/cross. I don’t think him at left wing is a great long term solution but it’s a far stretch from the unmitigated disaster I expected it to be.

Mohamed Salah- 9/10
Notched a goal and assist and could’ve had more. Still creating plenty of chances for himself and for others, and his general link up play was nice.

Substitutes
Adrián- 6/10
Did alright. Conceded. Alisson probably would’ve too.
Sadio Mané- 7/10
Looked good.
James Milner- N/A
Ran on and looked phenomenal.

VAR and Michael Oliver- 8/10
Amazing what happens when you’ve got a competent referee. Bit of a wobble at the start of the second half but otherwise faultless.
