Match Report: Wolves 1 Liverpool 2

Klopp’s red machine deliver once again. Liverpool are 16pts clear at the top after a hard-fought win at Molineux. Up against it for most of the second half after Raul Jimenez cancelled out Jordan Henderson’s opener; but Liverpool dug deep as Firmino was the late hero.

Liverpool come into the Molineux Stadium facing what might be their toughest match thus far in the league. Jurgen Klopp named the same starting eleven for the second consecutive match. Only Adam Lallana missing from the bench due to a virus.

Following a mix up at the bottom of the Liverpool box, Wolves won a soft free kick after referee Michael Oliver blew the whistle for a foul on Trent Alexander Arnold. Wolves winger Raul Neto played a dangerous ball into the box but Liverpool cleared their lines.

After being forced back to defend for the first 5 minutes, the Reds found some space on a counter due to a vital interception from Alex Oxlade Chamberlain. Ox took his space and fired a pass to Salah to was immediately dropped by Conor Coady and whistled for a foul. Free kick in a dangerous area for the Reds. Trent stepped up to take the free kick and it was deflected wide for a Liverpool corner.

Trent stepped up to take the ensuing corner kick, whipped in one of his trademark crosses and met Jordan Henderson’s head at the near post. 1-0 Liverpool after 8’.

Wolves won themselves a corner a couple of minutes after the opening goal and almost caught Liverpool out. A short corner routine to Reuben Neves found Matt Doherty unmarked at the back post but he fluffed his lines. Should’ve equalized, a major let off for Liverpool.

After a deflected clearance nearly fell to Raul Jimenez, Van Dijk cleared to Robertson who broke down the left, and found Mane who played a beautiful through ball to Salah who saw his effort on goal blocked by a fury of Wolves defenders. Decent chance for Salah to double the Reds lead.

Liverpool were beginning to expose the holes in this Wolves set up. A counter started from an Alisson pass to Gomez, who found Trent on the right. Trent lifted a pass over a few defenders to Ox, who took a touch and played Mane in over the top with a peach of a bal. A bit of an off touch put Mane off and he allowed Wolves to clear their lines. Nearly a picture perfect, world class piece of play.

A really good piece of sportsmanship occurred during the 24’. Rueben Neves was down injured with Firmino on the ball and the Reds in a decent position. Firmino halted play and kicked the ball out of bounds to allow the player to receive medical treatment. Neves was fine and got back onto his feet to carry on.

Sadio Mane went to the ground with an apparent injury, and signaled to the bench to be substituted. Klopp was forced to make his first substitution in the 33’, replacing Mane with new signing Takumi Minamino. On for his premier league debut.

After Trent misjudged a long ball and missed his header, Raul Jimenez pounced onto the ball and fired a shot well wide of Alisson’s near post. Alisson had it well covered, if I may add.

The referee added two minutes of stoppage time onto the end of the first half. Salah really fancied one as he took on the entire Wolves back line, beat a few as he shifted from left wing over to the right side of the box; but saw his effort once more blocked by a couple Wolves defenders.

The halftime whistle blew and the two teams headed in for the break with Liverpool leading 1-0.

Both teams came out for the second half unchanged.

Salah caught Adama Traore sleeping on the ball, dispossessed him and fired a shot at Patricio but it was saved for a corner. Wolves countered off the ensuing corner and Neto found space in the Liverpool box, and worked his angle; but Joe Gomez did well to recover and block his effort.

Jordan Henderson clipped a ball to the back post for Salah who cut inside on his right foot, but once more saw his effort saved by Patricio.

Wolves countered off the corner, with Raul Jimenez playing Adama Traore out wide to the right, and Traore returning the favor with a beautiful ball into the box and Jimenez headed the ball past Alisson for Wolves equalizer. 1-1 after 51’.

Adama Traore is making an impact in the first ten minutes. Constantly causing problems down Liverpool’s left side. This time he beat Andy Robertson 1 on 1 and the Scotsman brought him down outside the box. Robertson was booked for his tackle and Wolves won a free kick in a dangerous area. Liverpool did well to clear the initial ball, and the second effort from Wolves blazed over the bar.

Liverpool won a set piece in the midfield. Took it quickly and found Minamino at the top of the box. He tried his effort from eighteen yards but it was blocked, and Firmino’s follow up effort was held by Patricio.

Wolves were beginning to work the ball well while in possession. Some side to side play found Traore on the right, and he fired a dangerous shot on goal but Alisson did well to save.

Alisson Becker with another vintage Liverpool performance in goal. This time he saved Raul Jimenez’s effort after Traore left the entire Reds defense for ransom.

Wolves were too casual in their passing at the back, and Liverpool pounced on the ball. Salah looked off a few runners and took the initiative for himself but fired his shot wide, much to the frustration of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain.

Chamberlain was then immediately subbed, with Fabinho making his awaited return from injury in the 70’.

Adama Traore powered past Fabinho, who is absolutely no match for the Wolves forward. He ran into acres of space down the middle of the field and chose to shoot from about twenty five yards out and scuffed his effort wide. Van Dijk turned around and furiously reprimanded his midfield and frontline.

Wolves made their first substitution of the evening in the 77’, bringing on Diogo Jota for Raul Neto.

Liverpool finally had some possession, and Wiijnaldum lobbed a beautiful ball for Firmino who was in on goal but had his shot saved by Patricio.

Liverpool had the ball at the top of the box, Salah over it. Salah kind of stalled and misplaced his touch. Jordan Henderson picked it up and played Firmino in and this time Firmino finishes his chance to the left of Patricio! 2-1 Liverpool after 84’.

Klopp made his third and final substitution of the evening following the goal, bringing on Divock Origi for Mo Salah in the 85’.

Referee Michael Oliver awarded 4 minutes of stoppage time onto the original 90’.

Traore made a blistering run down the right side, got to the bottom corner of the box and lifted a cross to the back post. His cross met Jimenez, who played Jota into space from about 3 yards out and the Portuguese winger fluffed his lines horribly. Major let off for Liverpool, Wolves should be level.

The full time whistle blew. Final score Liverpool 2 Wolves 1. Fourteen league wins in a row for Jurgen Klopp’s mentality monsters. 40 unbeaten overall in the league as well. This team just continues to defy adversity and smash records. Nine wins from glory.
