Match Report: Sevilla U19s 0, Liverpool U19s 4

Liverpool U19s produced another thoroughly convincing display to ease past Sevilla in their UEFA Youth League Group match.

Goals from Liam Miller, Herbie Kane, Rhian Brewster and substitute Bobby Adekanye sealed the 4-0 victory and progression into the last 16 of the competition for Steven Gerrard and his team.

Sevilla U19 went into the game with a very strong home record over the last year, but found themselves behind after just 30 seconds when good pressing from Brewster on the Sevilla defence forced a mistake which allowed Kane to round keeper Pastor Vacas to open the scoring.

The home took a while to recover from the early setback and went 2-0 down on 39 minutes when Kane’s free-kick took a vital deflection and looped into the bottom corner.

Sevilla struggled to create any chances of note for most of the game – largely thanks to a terrific defensive display from Liverpool and the likes of George Johnstone to help earn their third clean sheet in five group games.

The second half did not get any better for Sevilla as they soon conceded a third, but the goal epitomised the vast difference in quality between the sides. The impressive Adam Lewis made a strong run down the left and produced a cross of real accuracy and precision to pick out the in-form Brewster at the back post to volley home.

The Spanish side were evidently growing in frustration as the game progressed, with lots of niggly and late tackles and fouls flying in. It was always going to take a miracle for the game to end without a red card, and one was eventually produced when Enrique Rios received his second yellow card when he brought Edvard Tagseth’s mazy run to an abrupt end.

After scoring the third, Liverpool were happy to sit off and protect their lead while looking to counter-attack if the opportunity arose – which it did when Adekanye sped through the Sevilla defence in injury time and curled his shot into the net for his side’s fourth goal.

A job well done for Gerrard’s side, and they will hopeful of finishing the group stage in style when they face Spartak Moskva in two weeks time.
