Liverpool eased to victory in the opening Continental Cup group tie as captain Gemma Bonner made her 100th appearance for the Reds.

Manager Scott Rogers made four changes as Casey Stoney was replaced by Ashley Hodson, Kate Longhurst by Caroline Weir, Natasha Harding by Ellie Fletcher and Niamh Charles by Bethany England.

The Reds started brightly as quick passing and good movement saw them dominate the ball. Just ten minutes into the game Greenwood lofted a ball over the defence, and Weir latched onto it. She slotted home last former-Red Danielle Gibbons to make it 1-0.

Liverpool continued their pressure as Alex Greenwood rattled the cross bar with her free kick from distance, and Weir was denied a second at point blank range. Weir did get her second of the night, as she cut inside from the right and drilled a shot underneath goalkeeper Gibbons.

Sheffield Ladies almost pulled one back as Rheme Lord-Meads found herself in space in the Liverpool box, but Siobhan Chamberlain saved well.

Liverpool’s third came shortly after the break, as Greenwood’s low ball in was converted in via Sheffield defender Ellie Gilliatt.

On the hour mark Sophie Ingle added the fourth. A delightful ball in from Weir was converted at the back post. Captain Gemma Bonner, making her 100th appearance for the Reds, had a succession of headers that were successfully cleared by the Sheffield defence.

Substitute Ali Johnson added the fifth as she streaked past Sheffield’s defence to score her first goal for the club. Beth England added the sixth and final goal as she took advantage of a poor backlash and slid the ball past Gibbons to score her first for the club.

Liverpool Ladies’ next game is away to Sunderland Ladies on the 28th of October, kick off is at 6:00pm.
