There’s nothing better than 3 points after an international break, and hopefully that’s what we’ll get today! This goes double as our squad made it through largely unscathed and we are in a much stronger position in terms of depth than a few weeks ago. Here’s who I think will take to the pitch today ahead of our game against Watford at Vicarage Road.
Alisson : Don’t expect Alisson to be rested at all unless he’s injured. He’s come in fit and firing and has quickly gained a good understanding with our back four. Been a massive signing for us, though more effective than spectacular – however after the dross of the last several years, effective is more than welcome.
Alexander-Arnold : After bagging his first goal for England, hopefully young Trent will be on a high. Not been as effective as last season, but it’s easy to forget that he’s still only twenty years of age.
Gomez : With Van Dijk getting most of the plaudits, sometimes it’s easy to forget how impressive young Joe has been. He’s only a year older than Trent Alexander-Arnold, remember -plus he’s had to deal with a couple of bad injury blows. Glad to see him getting the chances he deserves and, more importantly, that he is well and truly taking those chances.
Van Dijk : In my opinion Van Dijk is the best centre back in the world. This colossus is at the very top of his game right now, and he’ll be at the heart of our defence for many years to come.
Robertson : The Scottish captain looked like he was starting to show something closer to his form of last season just before the international break. When on form there is no better left back than Liverpool’s number 6.
Fabinho : Starting to get some game time, and is starting to show why we paid so much for him. An out and out defensive midfielder is what we’ve lacked since Mascherano left. Hopefully Fabinho can be that player.
Wijnaldum : Looked a little out of sorts for Liverpool in the previous couple of games, despite an impressive start to the season. Was very impressive for Holland this week, but not sure he’ll get to play that more free-roaming role for Liverpool very often. Still, on merit he deserves a start.
Keita : After a very stop-start beginning to his Anfield career, maybe it’s time Klopp unleashed Naby and give him a good run of games. Keita was arguably the signing Liverpool fans were most excited about this summer – unfortunately it hasn’t quite happened for him yet, but it’s early days yet.
Salah : Mo impressed again in midweek for Egypt and hopefully he’ll carry on with that form going into today’s game. Barring injury there are very few times he won’t make this list.
Mane : After signing a new long term contract earlier this week, hopefully he’ll celebrate with a goal or two today. Arguably he’s been the best of the front three so far, especially in the early weeks, so hopefully soon he’ll click with Bobby and Mo and all three will be firing again!
Firmino : Bobby seems like he’s struggling from a World Cup hangover, and I’d be tempted to give Sturridge a run in the team ahead of our Brazilian number nine. With Bobby being Klopp’s first name on the team sheet though, I can’t see that happening.
