First XI Prediction: Southampton

It’s time for the UEFA Super Cup winners to return to league competition today. Here’s Ian Young with his prediction for the team to face Southampton.

Adrian : Despite an idiot running on the pitch and causing Adrian to be a doubt today, I hope our Super Cup hero will be able to start.

Trent Alexander-Arnold : After being left out of the team midweek, I believe TAA will return today in place of Gomez at right back. Needed a rest, should come back in fit and hungry.

Virgil Van Dijk : Following another game where we failed to keep a clean sheet, big Virgil will be fighting tooth and nail to get the first competitive clean sheet this season. Realistically he only ever misses out if he gets injured.

Joe Gomez : Didn’t think Matip covered himself in glory on Wednesday night, can see Gomez being called upon today. Seems to be Klopp’s preferred option alongside Van Dijk.

Andrew Robertson : Another player who wasn’t at his best on Wednesday, but we got it over the line. Everyone’s entitled to an off day! Let’s just hope he doesn’t have another one.

Gini Wijnaldum : With the amount of ground that Fabinho covered and the amount of minutes he’s already played this season, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was given a break on the bench. Gini fills in the 6 role.

Naby Keita : If he’s managed to shake of this muscle injury, he could come into midfield ahead of Milner, who went off and immediately took an ice pack to his knee following a poor performance. This position is still well up for grabs.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain : The Ox wasn’t given any favours on Wednesday by being played as one of the wide forwards. Hopefully we’ll get the best of him once he’s back in his more favoured midfield role.

Sadio Mane : Mane won’t want to miss any more minutes of playing time. Fully expect him to start today.

Roberto Firmino : Bobby came on on Wednesday and completely changed the game, hopefully he’ll do that from kick off today against Southampton.

Mohamed Salah : I considered, due to the amount of minutes Salah has played, that Klopp may consider resting him. But given the changes in midfield, it might unsettle the team too much. Mo starts.
