Liverpool’s backline has been bolstered this season by the magnificent goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The Anfield Talk’s Sam (@sammillnelfc) has a look at the Brazilian’s path to Anfield…
Born in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, a town famed for its footwear manufacturing, Alisson’s career started out at boyhood club, Internacional. He made 56 appearances for the Brazilian top division side and it was during his time there that he was called up to the Brazilian national squad for the first time.
Alisson’s talent was seen by Roma and they were the European club to snap him up, however, his first season in the Italian Serie A didn’t go as planned. Being sidelined for the Pole, Wojciech Szczesny, he made no league appearances. Nevertheless, he stuck it out and became first choice the following season.Embed from Getty Images
Alisson had already had a taste of Anfield, even before he joined Liverpool. The atmosphere at the Champions League semi-final towards the end of the 2017/18 season was thought to have played a key factor in him joining Liverpool. On that night, he saw five goals fly past him in a night that will live long in the memory.
Known for his ability with his feet, the Brazilian shot-stopper is more than just an incredible passer of the ball. Towering at over 6ft 2’’, his presence between the sticks calms the defence down and allows him to claim crosses better than recent Liverpool goalkeepers.
His Liverpool career has got off to an outstanding start, conceding just 6 goals in his first 16 league games. He commands his area and makes his back line feel comfortable in being able to use him as an outlet.
At the age of 26, he is on course for a record breaking season which could help lead us to a first league title in 28 years.
